The rest of the specifications on both laptops are almost identical. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 price in India starts at Rs 1,37,990 but, the top-end variant I have cost Rs 1,46,990. Those who follow the tech space would know that the ROG Zephyrus is a gaming laptop, but it also caters to content creators. Now, it’s time to look at things in detail and tell you what makes the ROG Zephyrus G15 a powerful machine.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 review: Design
This can be very subjective. I know a lot of gamers prefer fancy-looking laptops with unique designs, powerful hardware, and unusual elements on the lid. The Asus ROG Zephyrus doesn’t feature any of them. It has a very simple and plain white lid with 8,279 spaced perforations across the surface as the only noteworthy mention. Honestly, I kind of like that.
This allows the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 to blend into any surroundings. The laptop comes in two colour options and the white colour variant which I got for review is an absolute delight. It’s not very often that I prefer white colour on anything and that speaks volumes for what Asus has achieved here with the G15.
It is not the slimmest or lightest laptop but maintains a decent profile for a gaming machine. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 is just 19.9mm slim and weighs 1.9Kgs. This gives it a huge advantage over other gaming laptops. The body is a mix of magnesium and aluminium, and the chassis feels quite solid.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 review: Display
What impressed me most about the Zephyrus G15 is its brilliant display. Asus has used a 15.6-inch 2K display with 165Hz refresh rate support. It also covers 98.4-per cent of DCI-P3 and 146.6-percent of sRGB colour space. However, it’s the 1440p screen that made a lot of difference for me. It is a lot sharper than the 1080 panels and the difference is even more noticeable due to the large screen size.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 review: Performance
Even before I talk about the performance, let me give you a disclaimer for someone who owns a console and literally survived the pandemic because of it, it’s not easy to go back to a gaming PC and be impressed. Yet, Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 managed to excite me on multiple occasions. The Ryzen 9 5900HS is one of the most powerful CPUs you can get with 8 cores, 16 threads, and 16MB L3 cache. The additional cores make gaming seamless and also come into effect while multitasking, ensuring that there are no lags. The GPU at the heart of Zephyrus G15 makes it a gaming beast but, it’s also the thermal system that makes a huge difference in getting that performance. Asus has used a liquid metal thermal interface and a redesigned Heatpipe and fan system that is faster and quieter than previous Asus laptops. It ensures that the laptop hardly heats up, and you can’t even hear the fan running. The audio performance is where Asus can do better. Asus claims to have 6 drivers in the laptop two tweeters and four woofers.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 review: Keyboard and trackpad
Asus has done a good job with the keyboard and the trackpad. Most keys (except the arrow keys) are big and well-spaced. They have good feedback. Asus has also equipped the machine with four dedicated hotkeys at the top. These include volume up and down buttons, a button to turn off the microphone and a button to directly open the Armoury Crate.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 review: Connectivity options
It’s been a while now since Asus started equipping its laptops with most connectivity options and that’s visible on the Zephyrus G15 as well. It has two USB Type-A ports, two USB Type-C ports (Gen 3.2 each) with 100-watts of Power Delivery and DisplayPort support, an RJ45 port, an audio jack, an HDMI 2.0 output, a Kensington lock slot, and a micro-SD card reader.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 review: Battery life
A gaming laptop with great battery life seems like a fantasy. But, this machine manages to do a decent job. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 is packed with a 90Whr battery which charges via a barrel charger. Asus claims that the laptop can deliver around 14 hours of playback. However, the maximum I managed to get was around 8 to 9 hours while streaming and about 6 hours with gaming. It is still decent for a gaming machine as you are unlikely to move it around.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 review: Final verdict
I think I made my thoughts about this laptop clear with the first few lines of this review. But, if you have reached here, let me highlight once again that the Zephyrus G15 is one of the best gaming laptops you can buy right now and that too, without breaking a bank. Yes, Rs 1,46,990 is not an amount everyone can spend but, it’s also what people end up paying for a capable gaming machine.
The Ryzen 9 5900HS and the RTX 3060 GPU ensure that you get a seamless performance, the display is a delight and you managed to squeeze an impressive amount of battery life. The only disappointments are the lack of a webcam and average audio quality. If that’s not an issue for you, then the ROG Zephyrus G15 should be the gaming laptop to spend this year. GET IT
